1 euro eBay baby goes home

The German baby taken from his parents after they put him up for sale on eBay for a euro--apparently as a joke--is back home, according to the Associated Press.

"The child has been returned to his parents," prosecutor Johannes Kreuzpointer told the AP on Thursday.

The parents had told the authorities the posting had been a joke. Prosecutors eventually agreed and dropped their investigation into child trafficking, the news service reported.

The original ad that ran May 24 stated: "Offering my nearly new baby for sale, as it has gotten too loud. It is a male baby, nearly 28 inches long and can be used either in a baby carrier or a stroller." The parents, both in their early 20s and residents of Unterallgau, were not identified. The bid price, 1 euro, is equivalent to about $1.57.

Otto Gaschler, deputy chief of youth services in Unterallgau, told the AP that the posting was "like a game for them. They never thought that this stupid joke could have such an effect."

Gaschler said he didn't know how exactly how long the infant was away from home but said it was for several days. "The parents always had contact to their son," he noted. A social worker is checking on the family, he told the AP.

The German authorities didn't find it 'funny' because they have no sense of humor. Read the stupid **** that Germany has done in the past 30 years, and you realize that they are going back to the 'Nazi' days more and more.
These parents should immediately sue the social services in Germany, and get a big settlement out of them. Then, maybe the German authorities will use their brains and THINK before they try to steal a baby from someone the next time.

Are you that stupid? This was about the most absurd "joke" I've ever seen. Posting on eBay constitutes a binding legal agreement that you do indeed plan to sell the item listed. What they did was illegal, regardless if it was in jest or not. Truth be told, they should not have got the baby back until they attended some parenting classes.

This is one of the dummest replies I have read in a long time. I agree that german's could use some more work on their sense of humor but the nazi comment is dumb. In terms of free press and having a political system where votes actually determine a winner of a presidential election we could learn from the germans.

Lerianis you are delusional. Do you really think it is just the German authorities who would not find a joke about selling a baby on eBay funny? I don't care what country you live in, you do something that dumb, you derserve to have your baby taken away while you are investigated. Do you ever stop to think what would have happened if the advert had not been taken down? What if someone had offered them a lot of money for their baby? Would they have just turned around and said it was a joke then? Despite what a lot of people think, when you buy or sell on eBay you are entering into a legally binding contract which can and has been upheld in courts of law. As the parent of a small baby myself I know how frustrating a crying child can be, but if you are any kind of parent you suck it up and deal because crying is what babies do. Advertising your baby for sale, even as a joke, is a) really really dumb and b) not funny. I don't care what country you live in, you do something that irresposible the authorities will take action. Stop being such a xenaphobe and grow up!

It is not dumb. There have been many cases of people putting fake ads in newspapers as jokes like this less than 20 years ago, and the authorities didn't overreact like this.
Secondly, if the person in question thought that this baby was actually for sale and offered money for this child, then THEY deserve to be investigated.

You are just a plain and simply total idiot who has no sense of humor, and I really hope that someone smacks you silly and implants a sense of humor into you.

This really serves to degrade humanity, and is a reflection of a very destructive trend. Such 'jokes' have serious consequences and serve to degrade the humanity of the baby in the eyes of the parents, and all those who were exposed to this ebay posting, and very possibly could effect the view of that baby of himself later in life, if he finds out. Even if he never finds out directly, he will probably suffer some form of inferiority because of the influence of the ebay post over his parents, and how his parents will view and treat him.

Wrong. This does not degrade humanity and is not 'a reflection of a very destructive trend'.
The only thing that it is: a joke. The same way that black jokes are funny, the same way that jokes about '******' are funny, etc.
Secondly, he will not suffer 'some form of inferiority' unless other people than his parents try to make him feel that he is 'inferior'.
Also, the only thing this will do, is make his parents view and treat the SOCIAL SERVICES like the total idiots they are. This is the main reason why I do not trust social services EVEN THOUGH I WORKED FOR THEM FOR A SHORT TIME: because I saw WAY too many cases where they basically stole children from loving families because the families 'didn't have enough money' or something else stupid like this.
